Kashgai
is one og the most renowned nomad confederations in Iran and is
located in the area around the south Persian town Shiraz. The
five nomad tribe, which joined together at the end of the 17th
century, have derived their name from the ruler family. They had
originally immigrated from Caucasus and even today the Gashgai
nomads
are Turkish-speaking, in contrast to the resident population.
As a conseqense the Kashgai rugs are called Turkibaff (=knotted
by Turks). Kashgai rugs are among the finest, firmest and also
most valuable nomad rugs to be found. A Kashgai rug basically
is very similar to the simpler Shiraz rug, but is of a clearly
higher quality.
